What was your first car?

My first car was a '68 Chevy Bel Air that looked very much like this - same color, too.  It already had 96000+ miles on it.  It cost me the equivalent of $32.00.

Used '67 Mustang Fastback. In exactly this color, which was referred to at the time as "puke green." Like Steve McQueen's in "Bullitt," but with a smaller engine (305 V8).


 

I loved that car. The most fun to drive of any car I've ever owned. But, because it was so light over the rear wheels, it was dangerous on wet roads and lethal on snow.

Going back as far as I can remember, I always wanted one care in particular. When I was of age, 15 back then, I was able to get my dream car. it was a 1989 Chevy Iroc -Z. The last series of IROC that Chevy made before they lost the name to Dodge(barf). Here is an image of what my car looked like.

looks like this except it was light blue and there was only one window on the Driver's Side on the Driver's door.



I got my license in January 1981 and I told Dad I wanted a car.

He told me:

"Go get a job you can work part time after school and full time in the Summer. For every dollar that you bring home that you ACTUALLY put in a bank account, I will match it."

It took me the entire rest of 1981 and most of 1982 (until the end of the Summer Vacation) for me to save $500, working for $3.35 per hr at Burger King, to buy that used van.

It had no AC, it only had an AM radio, there were no power windows, no power door locks (no such thing back then unless you paid extra), it was 4 cylinders and it only had 2 seats.


But at least it was automatic and had power steering and power brakes.

It had shag carpet on the inside; it was previously a delivery van.

During the Summer when it gets hot and humid, you could smell the stench of sweat emanating from the shag carpet.

But it was mine!

I was constantly washing it and waxing it (not that it did any good, the paint job on it was faded with rust spots) and I actually took girls out on dates with it.

During my Senior year, Seniors were allowed to drive to school  and leave campus for Lunch, so that's what I drove and I gave rides to my friends when we went to lunch.

First of all, congratulations!  Good news is nice to hear. 
Then again, you git it all wrong!  Your first car is supposed to be really crappy!  That's half the fun, years later - telling stories about breakdowns, mirrors falling off, that kind of thing...  Oh well, best of luck with the new car!
