How to use the new Search utility - step by step

(1/2) > >>

Greenclay:

The Search utility that's part of the new Forum software is quite a bit different
from the old Search utility.  Just to make things clear for everyone,
here is a little step-by-step guide to using the new utility.

To get started, click the "Search" menu option near the top of the Index page:

The first thing you'll see is the following screen.  Notice that the "Check all" option at the bottom left has been selected.  This is the default setting:

As shown below, all boards have been checked (ticked):

If you do not want to search every board, you can un-check (un-tick) this option:

Now, you can choose which boards you want to search.  For example, if you know that the pictures were candids but don't know how old they might be, you might choose "High Resolution Candids" and "High Resolution Candids Archive."  You can also include any other boards you might want to include.

Now you can choose the search parameters (options).  First, you can  specify if you want to search for all, or some, of the words you typed in:

The first sort option shown is "Most relevant topics" first...

That's ok, but the most usual choice is to display the most recent (newest) posts first:

When you have all of the search options selected and you have selected the board or boards to search, you are ready to run the search:

Here is a partial listing of the results for our search for "Kirsten Dunst"

Click on any of the links to open the post you want to see.

That's all there is to it.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

Is there a way you can see which results you have replied to like with the old search function?

Thanks!

We had a ShoutBox discussion about this in the last two weeks or so.  Unfortunately, the answer for the foreseeable future is, "No."  That capability was part of the vBulletin software.  Is it something that can somehow be added?  I am not sure.  It is something that we would have to look at in detail, but I don't think we can do that at the moment.  Sorry, that's probably not the answer you were looking for, but it is true.

Yes and no.  I have already asked about making "Most recent results first" as the default.  This is possible, but it would require some programming.  I cannot promise that we will, or will not, do it.  Sorry, but at the moment, that's the best I can tell you.

I am not sure what you mean by "search box in the upper right."  Right now I don't see any such search box.  Can you please tell me something more about this?
