there's 2 systems



1) this one is available only for the first poster of the thread. Click on the thumb and the "liked" number on the left gets higher (it's the sum of all the "liked" the poster get for all his threads), same in the thumbnail in the right corner at the top of the post (it's the sum of the "liked" for this thread)

2) this one is available for every post. Click on "like", and the "likes" number on the left gets higher (it's the sum of all the "likes" the poster get for all his posts, it's like the old "thanks buton" or "reputation"). You can click on "dislike", but this area isn't displayed.
